How much energy consumption occurs in your commercial refrigeration unit each month?

Depending on what kind of business or organization you operate, commercial refrigeration may be one of your largest expenses. For example, in grocery stores, commercial refrigeration and lighting make up more than 60 percent of your energy use.

Of course, the amount of energy your refrigeration consumes depends on variables unique to your facility. Do you use energy-efficient refrigeration systems? Have you replaced old components of refrigeration systems with newer ones? Do you have your commercial refrigeration units regularly inspected and cleaned?

Taking active measures like these toward having a more energy-efficient refrigeration system is a lot of hard work but it’s worth it in the long run. You have the opportunity to cut back on your energy bills by thousands if you work for it.

Improving the energy efficiency of your commercial refrigeration systems

You can improve the energy efficiency of your commercial refrigeration systems in many ways. Below are a few methods that help many businesses reduce the amount of energy their refrigeration systems consume:

  • Install electronically communicated motors (ECMs) — ECMs are a type of motor that helps move air across the evaporators in your system to help keep your refrigerator compartments cool. These motors consume less energy than the standard shaded pole motors and permanent split capacitors that come installed on many units.

If you’re installing a new refrigeration system, make sure it has an ECM. If you already have refrigeration, replace your old motors with ECMs to help cut back on energy consumption.

  • Use variable-frequency drives (VFDs) — VFDs control the frequency and voltage of the energy that powers your motors and compressors. Installing VFDs on your motors and compressors can help cut back on energy consumption and improve the lifespan of this equipment.

  • Schedule an energy analysis — An energy analysis from an energy professional can reveal and shortcomings in your system that are causing high energy consumption rates. Your energy professional should also be able to develop solutions to these issues to help lower your energy costs.
