Want to save energy with commercial refrigeration? Here’s what you need to know

The use of commercial refrigeration is vital to the operations of many businesses, including supermarkets, restaurants and hospitals. Commercial refrigeration does come with a price though. It consumes a lot of electricity, which can drive up your energy bills.

Fortunately, there are a few ways to save energy in your commercial refrigeration. This should save you more money in the long run and help improve the lifespan of your refrigeration units.

Place your refrigeration units in the best spot

Refrigeration units work by transferring heat from the air taken in from the environment into the refrigerant fluid. As you can imagine, the hotter the environment is around the refrigeration unit, the harder it has to work to keep the air inside cold.

Try to separate your refrigeration units from heat sources. In kitchens, this may mean placing your refrigeration units away from stoves and ovens. In supermarkets or hospitals, this means keeping your refrigeration units far from windows or doors that let in external heat.

Set the temperature correctly

Ideally, your refrigeration temperature should be between 37 and 40 F and freezers should be set at 5 F. These temperatures can preserve your goods while consuming the optimal amount of electricity.

Temperatures colder than this consume an unnecessary excess of electricity, and temperatures warmer may fail to preserve your goods. Regularly check your thermometers in your refrigeration units to make sure they are set at the right temperature.

Schedule routine maintenance

One of the best ways to save energy in commercial refrigeration units is to schedule routine maintenance. A refrigeration professional can visit your facilities on a regular basis to service your refrigeration units. This usually includes a thorough cleaning and an inspection for potential errors or areas that need improvement.

These services reduce the amount of energy your refrigeration units consume and can prolong the lifespan of various components.
